How to get a Gemini API key

This page speaks with your own Google account. The key stays in this browser and is sent only to Google.

  1. Sign in to Google AI Studio with the Google account that should own the key.
  2. Open the API keys page. Google’s guide is Using Gemini API keys.
  3. Accept the Gemini API terms if Google asks. A new account receives a default project and a key after you accept. You can rename that project from Projects in the AI Studio dashboard. If you already use Google Cloud and the project is missing, open Dashboard, choose Projects, click Import projects, select the project, and import it. Then return to the API keys page.
  4. On the API keys page, click Create API key and choose the project that should pay for usage. New keys made in AI Studio are auth keys. If an older key is marked Standard, create a new one. Since September 2026 the Gemini API rejects standard keys. Details are in Using Gemini API keys.
  5. Copy the key and paste it into Gemini API key on this page. It is saved only in this browser. It goes to Google when you speak, or when you import an image, PDF, or link.
  6. Check the cost before you speak. This page estimates Google’s paid Cloud Text-to-Speech rates. An unpaid key can still be inside the Gemini API free tier until that quota runs out. Quota and prices are on Gemini API pricing. After the free tier, Google bills the account that owns the key. Keep the key private. Anyone who has it can spend from that account.
